Following the few steps below, you will able
to set up your own 178 number, where to receive calls
from anywhere in Italy on your PC. Also, you will able to call other users
online and the free 800# in Italy! I myself have been using these numbers for years, and they work fine (I've never lost a call or a fax!).
What are the 178 numbers?
Here in Italy numbers starting with 178, are also named NOT GEOGRAPHFIC NUMBERS, because missing the local prefix (area code): they work using the new VoIP techology, and can be reached from anywhere in Italy at the same rates (from a regular phone line the caller is charged 0.055 €/minute, plus one time 0.12 € at the answer).
Moreover who pays the call is always the caller, so many providers are giving them away for free: these numbers cost about the same or are some more expensive than a local call, but they are always less than a long distance (at Telecom rates), and however they have always the same cost from anywhere in Italy.
In the same manner they can't access local public services (e.g. #112, 113, 118), neither they can't be used out of Italy.
To use a 178 number you only need: - an Internet connection
- a PC with a soft-phone, for example x-lite or SJPhone , or - better - use the one online provided by Tiscali with your number (netphone).
HOW TO SETUP A TRUE PHONE/FAX # IN ITALY FOR FREE (178-XXX-XXXX)
1. CREATE AN EMAIL ACCOUNT ON TISCALI.IT
First of all, you have to create a new email account at www.tiscali.it (it's free!):
choose REGISTRATI (Register, as Private custommer), mark all the tags in section 1 ("Accetto", I accept),
fill the form with your data, and click Submit ("Accetto" grey button).
Notes during the first signup:
Section 2
- Cognome = Lastname
- Nome = Name
- Luogo di Nascita = City where you were born
- Data di Nascita = Date of birth (in the DD/MM/YYYY format)
- Sesso = Sex
- Maschile = Male
- Femminile = Female
- Telefono = Phone (numbers only, any value is ok)
- Provincia ("State/Province"): any selected value is ok (it has no effect, choose one)
- UserID: must be from 1 to 20 chars alphanumeric string (letters and/or numbers) without spaces.
- Password: must be from 6 to 16 chars alphanumeric string (letters and/or numbers) without spaces.
Suddenly, to access your Tiscali mailbox from the web, go to : http://mail.tiscali.it/
If you want to read your emails from Outlook instead, use as
POP Server: pop.tiscali.it
2. ACTIVATE YOUR 178 NUMBER
From the confirm page that you will get now, to create your italian number, just click on
Attiva Fax >>
If you click on this link, it should take you to http://fax.tiscali.it/registration.jsp
Hence, inser your username and password (same of your Tiscali email account), first and last name, then click submit.
In the new page that you get, you will see something alike:
Wow, you've got your personal number! (Numero Personale: 178 XXX XXXX )
Note: from this page (http://fax.tiscali.it/) you will be able to handle your fax/voices messages if you don't choose
to redirect them to your usual email.
3. REDIRECT YOUR FAX/VOICE MESSAGES TO YOUR CURRENT EMAIL
To receive faxes and calls at your current email address, you have to change it into your email configuration.
To do this just :
- enter your Tiscali mailbox
- look for Opzioni and then for Casella Postale
- type your email in the textbox (see the red message below), then save (grey button "Salva")...done!
The redirect is not necessary, but it keeps the server free, and your number will not deleted if you don't use it for a while
(my numbers with the redirect are always still working even if I do not use them).
4. TALK ON LINE!
Finally, from the main menu of Tiscali, just click on .netphone (you will need to download the activex plugin the 1st time).
Remember to bookmark this page for news and update.
Connecting Tiscali in Italy you could also place calls for free, not only receive them (it works in Italy, but I'm not sure if Tiscali of other countries allow it).
